Local Service Project Ideas for Spring/Summer 2009

Veteran's (VA) Hospital (Anna) — 42nd & Clement, San Francisco

  • Ice Cream Social for the Vets (popular event for them)

    • When: Saturdays | 1pm-2:30pm | Possible dates of March 31st or April 11th
    • Who: Approximately 30-40 vets will attend
    • Cost: Sundae supplies (~$50 each time)
    • Recurring event
    • Additional ideas: provide music or distribute books during the Ice Cream Social

Adopt a Soldier (Anna) - As a volunteer-based nonprofit, Soldier’s Angels has over 30 different teams supporting all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Through special projects, dedicated teams and individuals supporting our troops, we make a visible difference in the lives of our service members and their families. Care packages are directed to units who are deployed in more remote locations.

  • Donate $100 for 4 care packages (2 men/2 women)

    • Send letters and/or photos along with the money to give a more personal touch
    • Fast project: Soldiers receive packages within 7-10 business days

Surfrider Foundation (Anna) - The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world's oceans, waves and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 50,000 members and 80 chapters worldwide. The San Francisco chapter consists of over 1,200 members throughout the Bay Area. We are surfers, windsurfers, dog walkers, environmentalists, fishermen and more. Many members of Surfrider are organized into sub-committees; many are involved with other organizations; and many act on their own when they find the time.

  • Ocean Beach Clean-up

    • When: Sundays | 10am-12pm | Possible dates of March 1st, April 5th, or May 3rd
    • Inexpensive project as they provide materials for clean-up

Kipp Bayview Charter School (Kendra)

  • Volunteer guidance for interviewing for 8th graders, 5th grade team building (mentorship and professional development)

    • Larger time commitment (training)

Interact Student Volunteering (Emily/Jim) - similar to Kipp Bayview project, but already established program through Rotary #2

  • Emily will investigate and report back

Variety Children's Games (Ellen/Jim) - no one was present to discuss this in depth

  • Assemble bikes and/or volunteer at events

Roots of Peace (John Hoch) - This non-profit was founded by Rotary #2. Funds will be used to restore the land to productive use for the local community as a grape growing region, for other international efforts and in support of Rotary #2 partnership with Rotary Club of Zadar, Croatia.

  • Gala event on February 27th

    • $ donation through event attendance ($75 per ticket)
    • Jim will discuss subsidized tickets with John and Rotaract may partially cover cost

Battered Women's Shelter (Emily)

  • Clothing/furniture drive
  • Getting pastries donated for events

Special Olympics (Katia/Rachel)

  • Volunteering at weekend sporting events (usually bigger regional events in the summer)

Each One, Reach One (Jessica)

  • Volunteer as needed with at-risk kids helping to get them involved in the arts
  • Help with typing up scripts

Glide Memorial (Lucy)

  • Professional Clothing Drive

    • Create flyers to hand out at work and to friends
    • Runs for one week
  • Mock interview and resume help (age 18-25)
  • "Career Fair" combination of clothing drive and interview/resume help
  • Serve Meals - possible date of April 11th

Larkin Street (Emily)

  • Donate $500 to five new/outstanding students or program graduates ($100 per student) to go shopping for new clothes

    • Rotaractors would take students shopping to be more involved
    • Possibly recurring (1-2 times per year)
    • Old Navy - Friends & Family Discount?
    • Treat like scholarship - have application and interview (write life plan to get them thinking about the future)
    • Rotary #2 has history with Larkin, so they may contribute funds
  • Need help at black tie fundraiser on February 22nd
